The Last Airbender celebrates its 17th birthday
Happy 17th Birthday Nickelodeon Avatar: The Last Airbender! The iconic animated series aired its first episode on this day 17 years ago in 2005. The Nickelodeon series kicked off with an hour-long premiere and has since garnered a large fan base. Ever since the show was introduced to the Netflix streaming service in 2020, a wave of nostalgia has swept through many fans old and new as we were reminded of Nickelodeon’s golden age. This new wave of re-love Avatar: The Last Airbender (I’m writing like ‘Avatar-Renaissance’) came just at a time when we all needed to have something to feel good about in life. This show’s “return” has finally caused many of us to reminisce about life as kids and mentally take a break from the harsh outside world in 2020. After the Avatar-rebirth, word of a new Avatar: The Last Airbender series was born, and somewhere in the future…we have a new Avatar Netflix live-action series ahead of us.
Earlier today the Nickelodeon Animation Account on Twitter posted a tweet celebrating the anniversary of episode one of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

the Avatar: The Last Airbender The series had a three-season run from its release 17 years ago today on February 21, 2005, until its two-hour finale on July 19, 2008. Each season has been declared a different “book” and each episode one ‘chapter.’ Season 1 of the original Avatar The Nickelodeon animated series was titled First Book: Water. The first episode, chapter one of book one, was titled “The boy in the iceberg.” No, we’re not talking about Steve Rogers but rather the long-lost Avatar and only living Airbender Aang. The description of the first episode says,
sokka and Kataratwo teenage siblings living in the South Pole, find out Aang and his pet flying bison, Appa, trapped in an iceberg. After Katara frees him, she discovers that he is an airbender and the siblings take him to their Southern Water Tribe home village. Meanwhile, her thaw attracts the attention of the Fire Nation. Zukowith the intention of capturing him.
This first episode sets up a long adventure for the trio as they navigate their way to getting proper training from Aang in the other elements water, earth, and of course, fire. The “Gaang”, at this point, consists only of clumsy brother Sokka, waterbender sister Katara and their bald little airbender friend Aang as well as our favorite flying bison Appa. Aang, Sokka, and Katara also had to strike a balance to make sure they got to where they needed to be in a certain amount of time while staying out of trouble and out of sight of the Fire Nation and the Prince Zuko. It wasn’t until the second season that the blind earthbender Toph also joined the “Gaang”.
Along the journey, we met some great characters and lost a few along the way, as well as many cabbage. For those who have never watched Avatar: The Last Airbender in full when they were younger, they felt they were missing something when the talks of the show came back. Many people now in their 20s watched the show like little kids because of their older siblings and have been loyal fans ever since. When the Avatar memes and discussions took place, everyone was so nostalgic and joking about ‘moon girlfriends and ‘cabbages’, you couldn’t help but want to see what the fuss was all about. It Was Only 15 Years Later, But Those Who Had Never Watched Avatar Finally Got To Watch the whole series on Netflix in its entirety for the first time about two years ago during quarantine. And I have to tell you, as one of those people…it was totally worth it.
Although it is an animated children’s television show on Nickelodeon, Avatar: The Last Airbender was so complex in its meaning that it was not episodic. As a kid, if you didn’t watch the previous episodes, you wouldn’t know the whole story. The three chapters of Avatar: The Last Airbender were given to us, water, earth and fire, were all so unique in their own way. Each leads their way to the climax of the big fight between Aang and the Fire Lord in the finale. Along the way, other ill-intentioned characters like Zuko have come to grow on you. Each character had so much to do and their stories all unfolded beautifully in a way each of them deserved. I’m very excited to see this story and these characters again in the next one. Avatar Netflix series.
