Actress Amanda Bynes calls for an end to her conservatorship

Celebrity Amanda Bynes is asking for her conservatorship to end. The US system that allows a person or organization to be responsible for an individual when the courts find that individual to be incapable of caring for themselves.

In a word

According to Page 6, former actress Amanda Bynes has filed paperwork seeking the termination of her court-ordered conservatorship. Lynn Bynes, Amanda’s mother, has been her conservator for almost nine years. Bynes, now 35, has been under conservatorship since August 2013 after being taken into psychiatric detention after she apparently started a fire in someone’s driveway in California.

Bynes regained control of her financial assets in 2017, but her mother still controls many of her personal decisions, including her healthcare.

Amanda Bynes has acted in several films including She’s The Man; What a Girl Wants and Easy A as well as TV shows including What I Like About You and The Amanda Show.

context

Bynes’ parents say they were already planning to end their daughter’s guardianship and support its termination. Yet many have made the link between this case and the highly publicized one of Britney Spears at the end of November.

Since then, another celebrity conservatorship case, that of Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols, has also come to light.

However, there are more similarities between Bynes and Spears, who were both child stars in the 2000s and whose mental health was regularly speculated in the media.

At the end of the line

Bynes’ case is due to be heard on March 22.
