A look at Miranda Cosgrove’s life outside of “iCarly”
Miranda Cosgrove is the face of many people’s childhood. Cosgrove rose to fame as Carly Shay on Nickelodeon‘s iCarly from 2007 to 2012, as well as her 2021 revival on Paramount. She was named the highest-paid child actor of 2012. The show was a major part of pop culture in the 2010s, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Children’s Program. She previously starred as Megan Parker on Drake & Josh from 2004 to 2007. Cosgrove, like many other former Nickelodeon and Disney stars, dabbled in music. Sparks Fly, the Kids’ Choice Award-winning actress’ debut album, was released in April 2020 and marked her break from the teen idol persona.
Sparks Fly features producers from Dr. Luke, The Matrix, Espionage and Rock Mafia and contains elements of sweet electropop music. Cosgrove has been the voice of Margo, one of three children from the orphanage adopted by supervillain Felonious Gru, since Despicable Me was originally released in 2010. In 2010, 2013 and 2017, the actress played Mina in three other Despicable Me films. She’s now gearing up for the release of her fourth feature, slated for 2024. It’s a well-kept Hollywood secret that comic book stars are often passed over for drama or horror roles. When she starred in Adam Massey’s 2015 horror film The Intruders, Cosgrove tried to challenge the “stereotype”.
The Intruders, starring Austin Butler, Donald Logue and Tom Sizemore, tells the story of a 20-year-old struggling with the suicide of her schizophrenic mother. After iCarly, Cosgrove branched out into more adult-oriented comedy with Crowded. The sitcom premiered on NBC in 2016 as a mid-season addition in the 2015-2016 season, with 13 episodes about “an empty-nest couple who find their adult daughters want to go home.” Cosgrove starred alongside Patrick Warburton, Carrie Preston, Stacy Keach and others in the film as one of the girls. Unfortunately, NBC decided to end the show after just one season. According to Deadline, the decision was made due to the show’s low ratings.
Interestingly, despite his fame as a beloved child actor at the time, Cosgrove waited a long time to receive his first Emmy nomination. From 2019 to present, she was the host of CBS Dream Team’s Unstoppable Mission with Miranda Cosgrove, a show that spotlights remarkable women scientists, and she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for an Educational Series or exceptional informative in 2020.
