The road to successful entrepreneurship is most often a long and winding road. Advertising entrepreneur Alan Sussman provides an example of someone who has taken a difficult and unconventional path to success. Below are four of the strategies that got him there. As you embark on your unconventional path, embrace these strategies and rest assured that you are in good company.

1. Turn fear into fuel.

Sussman fled an abusive home at age 14. As you might expect, he lived in a state of fear. However, Sussman chose to capitalize on his fears. Instead of giving in to it, he used fear as fuel to build resilience, determination and independence.

Sussman is in good company when it comes to channeling fear as a motivator for success. Popular author JK Rowling from Harry potter celebrity is well known for its history of overcoming adversity. Today she is one of the most famous authors in history. Rowling is an enterprising writer, considering how her books have fueled a film franchise and numerous products.

However, when Rowling started writing her world-famous books, she was in between jobs and living on government funding. In her Harvard speech, Rowling told listeners she owed her success as a writer to realizing her worst fears and building her life on what she called a “solid foundation” to touch. the bottom.

Fear often provides the best fuel for creativity. Once you recognize that your fears have no power, you are free to move forward in greater creativity and innovation.

2. Education is not universal.

Sussman is also one of a surprisingly large number of college dropout entrepreneurs. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook Fame and David Geffen of Geffen Records and DreamWorks Studios are in the same boat. These two very successful entrepreneurs also chose to drop out of college and forgo graduation. For some, formal education is a great tool and leads to success. However, if you’re not sure whether education is the right decision for you, don’t get lost in the fear of dropping out of a degree.

Take the time to discover your interests and passions. Use them as a starting point. Modern technology has made it possible to learn a trade without sitting in a classroom or spending thousands of dollars on a college degree. Take advantage of opportunities that you find interesting and bond along the way.

3. Build your business around your strengths and interests.

Long before Sussman entered the advertising industry, he took the time to discover his talents and the things that really interested him. After dropping out of school, Sussman even tried skydiving and worked in the music industry. It was while working writing commercial jingles that he finally realized his passion for marketing.

Self-discovery is an important and necessary part of the development of any entrepreneur.

Too often, we dive into an area or move forward with an idea that doesn’t perfectly match our skills or passions. Thinking critically about what you enjoy doing and the specific ways in which you are good can help guide your career. That said, it depends on your self-awareness and flexibility to recognize when something isn’t right for you and be ready to adjust.

4. Boldness drives the day … liabilities don’t sell.

Ultimately, at least one of every entrepreneur’s priorities should be to push the boundaries. This means that invariably they will meet with opposition. Whenever you take a new path or generate a new idea, know ahead of time that you will need to be bold in order to be successful. Passivity will get you nowhere.

Creativity is at the heart of any successful business and it is also at the heart of the challenges to be overcome. If you are having difficulty in your life, whether in your career or in your personal life, consider the issues creatively.

Once you’ve decided to go the unconventional route, keep in mind that opposition is inevitable, but creativity is an integral part. Take notes from leaders in your field, track what works for you, and remember that no two paths are the same.
